Wine is a beverage loved by many. Health benefits of wine consumption are continuously a trending topic by experts, scientists, and the medical community. Since the early 2000s, there is growing research to prove that wine may offer benefits to your body.
The quantity of wine consumed is a question that often comes to mind. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), 10 grams of wine proves to give benefit to heart health. A research done by the University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 2005 shows that 300 ml of wine (roughly 2 glasses) is beneficial to your health.
The quantity of wine that is beneficial may differ between individuals. Each individual has a different health profile and risk factors for different diseases. Consuming wine in moderation is recommended for your health; however do note that heavy consumption of alcohol may also cause liver and heart problems, amongst other diseases.
Benefits of Wine:
- Wine increases the levels of HDL or high density lipoprotein, also coined as “good cholesterol” and decreases the levels of LDL or low density lipoprotein, or “bad cholesterol”. A higher level of HDL and lower level of LDL is good for the health of your coronary arteries and heart.
- Wine contains a substance called phenol. According to studies done by the National Institute of Food and Nutrition in Italy states that phenol helps prevent damage to the coronary arteries or heart vessels that are done by LDL. However, too much phenol (from chronic heavy drinking) shows that it may be detrimental to bone health as it decreases bone density, and may also increase your blood pressure which is a risk factor for stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.
- Reservatol, another substance found in wine, is an antioxidant that prevents damage done by free radicals to the body.
Considering the advantages of wine that have been found by scientists, it opens up possibilities of many other benefits that we have yet discovered.
Once again, it should be noted that “moderate” consumption of wine is different to every individual and we encourage everyone to drink responsibly.
